2nd Mar 2014 | 14 mile off-road. |
Venue: | Start/finish Salisbury race-course. |
Travelling time: | 45mins. |
Weather: | Very strong SW wind, cold rain started half way round |
Comments: | Much less mud than expected, mostly avoidable puddles.
Too many boring miles on flat hard stony/tarmac bridleway; long downhill to Broadchalke might have been good, except on concrete track, into strong headwind; 2 more interesting steep diversions down off the escarpment - walked back up the hills. Well organised - plenty of marshals and arrows on course; hot showers at finish. Alec came and walked part of route. |
Age-groups: | up to mv60, fv60 |
Results: | Rosemarie 2h:26m:59s (2nd fv60, beaten by Jenny Mills from Devon)
118 finishers |

18th May 2014 | 10k off-road. |
Venue: | Start/finish Strawberry Fields (above Cheddar Gorge). |
Travelling time: | 2hrs to Cheddar (Saturday); 15mins from Campsite to start. |
Weather: | Sunny, v.warm |
Comments: | Another super off-road event, and the weather was glorious too.
We decided to go there on Saturday, and camp overnight, though it only took just over 2 hours to drive to Cheddar. We found the Cheddar Bridge campsite on the outskirts of the village (small & friendly), with a 10 minute walk to the gorge, and pubs with lots of lovely local cider. Our first challenge was the drive to the race start, up a narrow lane, with very a sharp hairpin bend requiring a multi-point turn in the campervan - even the cars were having problems. But there was ample parking in a field at the top. The race route went mostly along the top edge of the gorge - very scenic, though the uneven terrain made it hard to look around, and you couldn't see much of the gorge itself. It was all hilly (as expected), but there was only one major challenge, at about 7k - a very steep hill, with steps reminding me of the Dorset coast path runs. I got a voucher for winning my age-group (though there wasn't much competition), and then won a spot prize - my lucky day! The winner did it in 41m53s, the slowest in 1hr37m. An enjoyable event, and well organised. The day also included a 5k and a 300m fun-run around the start area, attracting mainly enthusiastic accompanied children. Alec brought his camera and walked the last part of the route. |

Travelling time: | Under 1 hour. No problems parking. |

My leg was longest 7.6miles - only walked one short steep bit - ran all the way up Farley Mount! Got a bit held up by slower marathon runners. Team rehydration at 'Dolphin' in Hursley after. |

Based in campsite, but no use of facilities (only portaloos). Same course as last year: all off-road, mostly gravel, some very muddy tracks, plus a stream crossing. Undulating, mainly down for first half, mainly up coming back, with long muddy hill to finish. Well marked and marshalled, goody bag, including insulated mug. Waited for presentations - several NFR age-group winners. 13 NFR runners (plus 8 in the 5 mile race). Pleased to be 4 mins quicker than last time. |

26th Oct 2014 | 10.1 miles, mostly off-road, hilly.
Venue: | Shillingstone Church Centre (old hands still call it the primary school)
Travelling time: | about 1hr, left home 8:30am (drove myself - Alec stayed home);
Slow journey - tractors along road from Blandford; used race carpark by finish at old station.
Weather: | Mild,cloudy,breezy.
Comments: | Ground driest I can remember.
New start in field - hook-start, causing hold up before line. Big people-jam at bottom of Stickle path, having to get into single-file. Same course as previous years: managed to run up at least some of each hill. Too many runners with dogs - mostly well-trained but a couple of nuisances. Well marked and marshalled; nice tech-Tshirt for everyone, shame about the day-glow yellow! Only half minute slower than last time (2011). Quads killing me next day.
Age-groups: | 40+,50+,60+, gents and ladies.
Results: | No other NFR runners there, but lots of friends from other clubs.
Rosemarie 1:43:04 (1st v60 - surprise!) £20 card voucher, plus specialty cheeses from sponsor. 273rd, of 388 finishers (49th lady, of 111 finishers). |
